8th grade: 75% assessments (quizzes, papers, projects, etc.), 25% assignments
Semester 1
1st week: Get to know you, rules, Pre Exam (semester & STAR) Walk to Clio Library
Unit 1: Independent Reading- get a book from the library or classroom library
Format:
-Basic terminology questions (5-8 terms)
-1-2 short stories with questions over the stories (10-12 questions)
-Grammar questions (3-5 questions)
Semester 2
1st week: 2nd Semester Pre-Exam / STAR
Unit 4: Poetry/Lit. Group Project #2
8th grade-Thank You, Ma’am, All Summer in a Day, The Monkey’s Paw, The Lottery
Semester 2 Exam
Daily Schedule-
Monday - Thursday
10/15 minutes of independent reading and conferencing
10-15 mini-lesson/grammar
The rest of the time writing/reading practice
Friday- reteaching/flexible learning day

Unit 1: Independent Reading- get a book from the library or classroom library
- 4 weeks - may be longer because of the choice menu
- Post unit test- pick a short story and identify:
- 8th grade - “The Gift of the Magi” or O. Henry
Explain plot elements - Identify a theme
- Mini lessons over
- Reading Strategies
- Exposition, Rising action, climax, falling action, resolution
- Theme, setting, conflict, protagonist/antagonist
- Drawing inferences using textual evidence
- Using skills to identify unknown words

- Identify a theme
- The goal of the unit is to build some independent reading and get students able to read on their own moving forward. Teach plot.
- Standards covered: RL.7.1, RL.7.2, RL.7.3, RL.7.4, RL.7.10
- 8th grade: 5 paragraphs, with counterclaim and rebuttal, pick prompt
- 5 weeks-Post unit test- use the essay
- Mini lessons over:
- Hooks, transitions, claims, evidence and supporting with commentary
- Citing sources and identifying credible sources
- Understanding the prompt
- 8th grade: identifying and discrediting opposing viewpoints
- Standards covered: W.7.1 (A,B,C,D,E), W.7.4, W.7.5, W.7.6, W.7.8, W.7.10, RI7.1, RI.7.8, RI.7.9, RI.7.10
- Hooks, transitions, claims, evidence and supporting with commentary
- Be sure to hit point of view and perspective and how it relates to the overall theme and plot of a story
- 4 weeks
- Post unit test
- Mini-lessons over:
- Character motivation, setting, conflicts, character changes
- Being prepared for discussions, identifying evidence to support ideas

- Post unit test- writing choices (Narrative writing- sequel/prequel or mix characters from the short stories,)
